A true civilization embraces spiritual and aesthetic values pursued for their own sakes, and can only be achieved by a community which has already mastered the basic problems of day-to-day survival, and has leisure and inclination to speculate on the nature of life and man's place in it, and to create a social structure and a religion. The gods and kings who rule man's destiny must be fittingly housed, and however simple the home which shelters his own household, as soon as his barest necessities have been met, he turns his hand to constructions mighty and splendid enough to placate the powers on whom his welh being depends.
