The Seattle Art Museum, whose tradition of exhibiting photography extends back to the 1930s, is proud to present the photography of Lee Friedlander. Though Friedlander was born and raised in Aberdeen, Washington, and has returned to the Northwest regularly, this is the first opportunity for his art to be surveyed here firsthand and in depth. Furthermore, this is the largest and most comprehensive presentation of Friedlander's vision ever undertaken. The exhibition's lengthy tour indicates the breadth of interest in Friedlander's achievement as a photographer. His work has earned him three Guggenheim fellowships (1960, 1962, and 1977) and two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships (1972 and 1977). In 1986 he was the recipient of the prestigious MacDowell Medal for lifetime achievement in the arts, the first photographer to receive this award. His work is as innovative today as it was twenty-five years ago when he first received national recognition.
The early stages of the planning and preparation for this exhibition and catalog, which were first conceived in 1984, would not have been possible without the strong support and enthusiasm of Arnold ,lolles, former director of the Seattle Art Museum, and Suzanne Kotz, former publications manager at the museum. Lee Friedlander had primary artistic direction
over both the catalog and the prints in the exhibition. In printing the catalog, he collaborated with Richard Benson, who prepared the plates by employing a unique process of tritone separation. The book was printed by Litho Specialties in St. Paul, Minnesota, and bound by Horowitz/Rae in Fairfield, New Jersey. Charles Miers of Abrams and Helen Abbott at the Seattle Art Museum worked closely with Friedlander, curator Rod Slemmons, and designer Katy Homans an the catalog. Liz Spitzer of the museum's Modern Art Department coordinated the search for venues and the traveling schedule for the exhibition. Scott Charles and Nanette Pyne of the museum's Development Office and Patterson Sims, chief curator of the museum, shepherded the funding process for the project, securing grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and PONCHO (Patrons of Northwest Civic, Cultural, and Charitable Organizations) as well as from private sources. Those private sources were the key to the success of the project. lncluded among them are Seattle residents and companies who have been strong, generous, and constant supporters of photography as an art form at the Seattle Art Museum: Jerome D. Whalen, Yuen Lui Studio, John H. Hauberg, John A. Putnam, Foster Pepper & Shefelman, and Carl arid Jacklyn Meurk.
