The 1979 WCC Conference on Faith, Science and the Future, has pushed ecumenical thought into new and important areas of human experience. The twovolume official report teils the story of the conference and the concerns it sets before the churches.
Volume 1 contains the plenary presentations, edited by Prof. Roger Shinn of Union Theological Seminary, New York. In his introduction, Prof. Shinn provides an informative account of the theological, intellectual and social dynamics at work as the conference moved from one theme to another, and highlights the theological and ethical challenges which the conference poses to churches and all interested Christians.
Volume 2, containing the reports and recommendations, has been edited by Dr. Paul Abrecht, director of the WCC's sub-unit on Church and Society. The ten section reports show how this meeting was able to relate the issues of science and technology to the WCC's concern for a just, participatory and sustainable society. It contains also the report of the science students who participated in the conference, after holding a preliminary meeting of their own. A conference resolution on science for peace and a statement on science and technology by a large group of third world participants are also included.
Pastors, theologians and lay people, whether or not they are specialists in a scientific discipline, will be instructed and challenged by the exchange of ideas developed in these volumes.
