Microsurgery is a technical procedure applicable to nearly all types of neurosurgical operations, with a few exceptions. The hesitation of some neurosurgeons to abandon the conventional methods used in tumor operations in favour of microsurgery can be explained by the occurrence of certain technical and topical difficulties. These difficulties are presented here in detail by the author, based an four years' experience at the Neurological Center of the University of Freiburg (Federal Republic of Germany), where more than 1000 microsurgical brain operations were performed.
In the presentation of extracerebral space occupying processes and vascular processes the author was helped by the detailed description of microsurgical technique as already published by KOOS, LOGUE, MALIS, RAIMOND], RHOTON, SUGITA, YASARGIL and others. These sample operations presented the essential topical problems and corresponding special technical difficulties.
This new book differs from conventional neurosurgical texts in that it:
1) Demonstrates the applicability of general microsurgical principles to all brain operations.
2) Gives a more extensive presentation of the technical details.
3) Follows, when necessary, overviews of the organ by gradual enlargements up to higher resolutions of the surgical microscope.
4) Is a book in which the text is restricted to a minimum. Used predominantly are Indian ink drawings created exclusively by the author.
