Presurgical Evaluation of Epileptics
The contributions in this volume review and evaluate the methods currently used for presurgical investigation of patients suffering from drug resistant seizures with focal onset, who are therefore potential candidates for surgery. Five main topics are treated:
- Basic considerations relevant for seizure origin and spread, including anatomical and physiological data, pathophysiology, field potential generation, pathology, and neuropsychology.
-    Electrophysiological and other diagnostic procedures: electrotechnology, MEG, MRI, and PET, conventional neuroradiology, an epileptological preevaluation, and an intensive presurgical evaluation protocol.
-    Electroclinical semiology of the epilepsies; with a review of the electroclinical semiology of focal epilepsies in different locations, including limbic and focal epilepsies with secondary bilateral synchrony.
- Implications for the surgical approach, including drug resistance, and pre-
operative indicators for surgical outcome.
-    The rationale and efficiency of the surgical approach, including cortical re-
section for multilobe epileptogenic lesions and selective microsurgical and stereotactic interventions.
This approach provides the reader with a logical sequence of information. lt offers a complete overview in this field of growing importance and will serve as a useful reference work.
